Our hospital stay was a little eventful…it started on Friday when we arrived there at 7:30am, which was 2 hours prior to my scheduled c-section.

Once hooked up to the monitors we discovered I was having contractions about every 5 minutes. The bad news was that Logan’s heart rate would drop with each of my contractions. So, we would have been bound for a c-section even if he wasn’t breech. The surgery went well and before we knew it, Logan was here!

On day two (Saturday) the doctor noticed that Logan was looking a little pale, so he ordered some blood work and another jaundice test. His jaundice number was low, so that was ruled out. However the blood work came back and showed that Logan had a low red blood cell count. The doctor’s were a little puzzled since there was no abnormal bleeding during delivery and no other issues to indicate there was a problem. The pediatrician decided that Logan should go on formula while still breastfeeding to increase his iron and to get him eating more.

On Sunday morning another blood test was done and Logan’s red blood cell count had improved slightly. We still didn’t know what caused the low count to begin with, but at least he was improving. During Logan’s check up Sunday evening, the nurse detected a heart murmur. Transitional heart murmurs are extremely common in newborns; however since he had the issue of the low red blood count other tests were ordered. Logan was taken to the nursery where he was examined by a NICU nurse and a pediatrician was consulted. The pediatrician ordered an EKG as well as a chest x-ray. Both tests came back normal! The murmur will continue to be monitored to see if anything develops, but for now everything appears to be normal.

Logan continued to do well and became more alert while in the hospital. Even with all the poking and prodding of the nurses and doctors, Logan remained in high spirits and was a happy boy.

By Monday he was off of the formula and was back to nursing full time. We were given the option of going home that day or waiting until Tuesday. Matt and I decided to wait until Tuesday since we wanted a full normal day with no tests for Logan.

On Tuesday we met with Logan’s pediatrician and she ordered more blood work prior to discharging us. His pediatrician has been amazing! We were finally discharged after part of the blood work came back and showed that Logan’s red blood cell count had increased some more.

Logan really enjoyed all the visitors that came to see him in the hospital!
